Well, I’ve got another metaphor this week and it’s called the Hidden Hamster Wheel which I borrowed from my mentor, Jamie Smart. I believe the cartoon says it all, but for those out there that like a bit more of an explanation, well, here it goes…
The Hidden Hamster Wheel is when we keep spinning our wheels in life, not going where we want to go and not enjoying the ride. How many of you are on that wheel and would you like to get off and experience a different one?
The first step is to look at your current goals and ask yourself 3 questions:
1) I really want this?
2) The outcome does not affect my happiness?
3) This goal improves my quality of life in the present?
Now, if you answered ‘No’ to any of the 3 questions above, then my guess would be that this goal is a TOXIC GOAL, hence the hidden hamster wheel. The achievement is linked to an outside-in understanding of life and you will never achieve that happiness in this fashion as there will ALWAYS be something else. I’ll be happy when I make a million dollars, I’ll be happy when I buy my first home, I’ll be happy when I love my job, and on and on and on…
The reality of life is that we operate from the Inside-Out Understanding and once that is revealed and understood, those hamster wheels disappear. Don’t get me wrong, goals are useful when the answers above are ‘Yes,’ and they are flexible and dynamic as for most of us when does our life end up exactly the way we planned? It just doesn’t work that way. Life is all about the UNKNOWN and by understanding that whilst having HEALTHY GOALS, it becomes a fun and enjoyable ride as opposed to a runaway car.
So get off that hamster wheel and who knows what you may find…
